Mahavir Jayanti is a public holiday in India.
The birth anniversary of Vardhaman Mahavir, who was the 24th Tirthankar (Religious Guru) and founder of Jainism is celebrated on this day. This is the most auspicious day for Jain community all over the world. This birth anniversary is celebrated with great respect and love in all Jain temples across the country.
Major celebrations of Mahavir Jayanti are at Shri Mahavirji at Rajasthan, Girnar and Palitana in Gujarat, Parasnath Temple in Kolkata and Pawapuri in Bihar. The temples are decorated with flags. A ritual bath is given to the idol of Tirthankar.
The special activities which have great importance on this day are
- Donating Money
- Donating food and clothing for poor.
It is even observed that people at individual levels or even Jain Organizations arrange for food and drink for all people participating in the event.
