How to make your child self reliant?

Helping children to become self reliant is a great thing. This helps them to face the world in a much better way. Making children self-reliant is of course a challenge for the parents. Parents often feel hesitant to step back and let children try something on their own. Parents often tend to hover around their children and swoop in at the slightest hint of discomfort expressed by their children. Such parents are so much possessive about their children that even when their children grow up they continue to treat them as kids and hardly let them take up tasks on their own.  However parents should try to achieve a balance between letting them take up tasks for themselves and helping them in times of their need.  This is a talent that many new parents have to develop. This balance, if achieved, can be a great thing in helping to develop a more self-reliant generation. Self-reliance does help boost the confidence level of children.  So now, the question we have to face as adults is: how can we, as parents, instill self-reliance and a feeling of responsibility into our loving children?

  •  self reliant    Well, to start with, let us allow our children to make some decisions. It may be hard to believe but, try giving a few selections to children to choose from and you would be surprised that even young children may be able to decide for themselves.  For instance, try asking a kid: what would you want to wear to the park today, your red shirt or the blue shirt? What sandwich would you like to have today, peanut butter sandwich or a cheese sandwich?  He or she may already have given you the answer. See, this way right from young age children can start deciding for themselves which can help them take more important decisions at later stages in their life with little or no guidance.
  • You, as a parent can also let them see you take decisions.  When children see you engage in self-reliant behaviors, they will pick up and exhibit similar behavior which would in turn make them self-reliant.
  • As far as possible allow them to do what ever work they want to do on their own which does not involve much risk.
  • Children always copy the adults in the house.  So try to teach the things repeatedly which they can grasp easily and start doing on their own without any difficulties.
  • Let them understand what is good or bad or right or wrong own their own in simple things.  Do not try to keep them away before hand thinking about the trouble they may face.

  • Try to allow them to do their home assignments, tie their shoes, keep their clothes neatly,  wash dishes after break fast , packing their school bags, making bed

self reliant

  • Never try to tell girls that they can’t change the light bulbs and never try to tell boys that they should not clean dishes.  Let them do the work which will develop their own personality irrespective of their gender.
  •  Never forget to praise your child if you find him/her doing some work regularly on his/her own.
  • Be always supportive.  Your child should know that they can count on you when they need you in completing particular tasks.
  • Always encourage healthy risk taking.  Tell your child that making mistake is ok but giving a try is important and no one can be perfect at first instance.

Your children will learn how to face the world only with your guidance & care.  Your words and encouragement will have long lasting effects on their life.  This will lead to healthy growth of your child for sure.
