Transit of Venus 2012

On 5th/ 6th June, 2012 a black spot will slowly cross the Sun’s disk between 10.09 pm UT and 4.49 am UT.  This transit can be observed from all parts of the earth on the day light side.

This rare phenomenon occurs when the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and Earth.  Venus can be seen as a small black drop moving across the face of the Sun. This rare event won’t occur again till 2117.  This is a very important event and has been viewed by figures such as Captain James Cook and Benjamin Franklin.

The transit can be observed using

  • Only a pair of solar filters
  • Projecting the sun with field glasses
  • Photographing through a telescope
  • Observe the transit of Venus under the supervision of elders

What we should avoid?

  • Never observe the Sun with naked eyes, even at the time of transit and otherwise too.
  • Never look at the Sun directly through telescope or binocular.
  • Do not look at the reflection of the Sun in plain water or colored water.
  • Never use a smoked glass or a color film, sun glasses or X-ray films. They are not safe for eyes.

Viewing the Sun without proper equipments and techniques can result in serious eye injury or blindness.
